Macrofouling

Macrofouling (animal fouling) occurs in systems utilizing freshwater, brackish and seawater as their source water. Two non-indigenous species of mollusk the Asian clam, Corbicula fluminea, introduced to North America from Southeast Asia in the early 1900s and the zebra mussel, Dreissena polymorpha, introduced from Russia to the Great Lakes in 1986 are responsible for the rapid growth in Macrofouling problems over the last two decades. The Center for Biological Macrofouling Research, University of Texas Arlington, predicts that biofouling of potable water treatment, navigation, industrial and power generating raw water systems by Asian clams and zebra mussels will eventually cost Industry 3-5 billion dollars year as they spread throughout North American freshwaters.
