Flocculation

Flocculation is an important step in the treatment of industrial wastewater. Flocculation is the process of agglomerating coagulated particles into settleable flocs. Flocculation is achieved by the addition of flocculants, usually polymers which form bridges between the flocs, (different segments of the polymer chain adsorb on different particles) binding the particles into large agglomerates. Agglomerated flocs either settle or rise depending on the difference in specific gravity of the flocs and the suspending fluid. These flocs are then separated by sedimentation, filtration, straining or flotation. The degree of flocculation is dependent on the opportunity for contact, the concentration of the particles and particle size distribution. Care must also be taken during the mixing process as the newly formed agglomerated particles are fragile and may be broken apart by shear forces during mixing.
