Disinfection
 
Disinfection is an important step in the treatment of municipal drinking and wastewater. Disinfection is the process of inactivating through killing, or otherwise rendering nonviable or nonvirulent, a large proportion of waterborne microorganisms, such as fecal and other pathogenic bacteria, viruses, and coccidian cysts. Disinfectants are most commonly oxidants such as chlorine, bromine, chlorine dioxide, ozone and peracetic acid.
