Dechlorination

Chlorine is typically introduced into municipal drinking and wastewater, and industrial plants as an oxidant and disinfectant to control microbiological growth. Chlorine is applied either as a gas, as a liquid sodium hypochlorite, or through the addition of another chlorine containing compound such as solid hypochlorites. In drinking water residual chlorine levels are controlled by the USEPA. In industrial applications excess chlorine can interfere with industrial processes, accelerate corrosion of process vessels and piping and damage sensitive equipment such as reverse osmosis (RO) membranes and demineralizer units. Residual disinfectants must comply with specific water quality discharge or receiving water limitations required in the WWTP’s National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System permit (NPDES).
