Metal salts can be effectively used in wastewater systems to remove phosphate. When the metal salts hydrolyze in water they form metal hydroxide flocs that will absorb the phosphate. The floc can then be removed via clarification and settling or via filtration.
The use of Iron salts in a wastewater system will also:
- Reduce H2S in liquids and digester gas
- Reduce struvite formation
- Improve sludge dewaterability
The use of Aluminum salts will also reduce struvite formation.
