ALTIVIA has licensed for commercial distribution a proprietary patented
electrochemical chlorine dioxide technology.
The ALTIVIA E-Series of Electrochemical Chlorine Dioxide Generators
offer the first real alternative for small users of chlorine dioxide.
The ALTIVIA E-Series of Electrochemical generators produces
chlorine-free chlorine dioxide gas safely under vacuum from the direct
electrochemical oxidation of 25% sodium chlorite and water.
A side-stream of high-purity 10-20% by weight sodium hydroxide solution
is co-produced in the reaction. Hydrogen gas in a very dilute form
(<0.1% in air and well below explosive limits) is also co-produced and
fed to atmosphere via an air blower on board the system.
The predominant anode reaction is the rapid and kinetically favored one
electron transfer oxidation of the chlorite ion as shown in reaction
(1) below:
(1) ClO2-  ClO2 + e-
The reaction occurring at the cell cathode is the reduction of water, producing hydrogen gas (H2) and hydroxide ions (OH-) as in reaction (2):
(2) 2H2O + 2e- H2 + 2OH-
Generators are available in several capacities to 30lbs per day.
